About This Analysis
240 walking routes were generated via OSMnx across 59 Austin schools using the full pedestrian street network. Tree canopy coverage was calculated from the City of Austin Urban Forest Inventory (62,274 city-maintained trees). Each tree's crown radius was estimated as 0.9 × trunk diameter (inches) in metres, then buffered. Routes were buffered 5 m on each side; the canopy-to-corridor overlap fraction is the coverage %. The Thermal Exposure Index combines walking time × canopy gap. Equity analysis uses ACS 2022 5-year estimates spatially joined to 766 Travis County block groups via Census TIGER Cartographic Boundary Files. Note: the inventory covers public trees only; private residential canopy is not included, so coverage values reflect street-level city-managed shade rather than total neighborhood canopy.
